Martin Strauss gained his Licentiate Diploma in piano from the AMEB in 1996. He studies piano with Stephen McIntyre at Melbourne University, where he is Robson Music Scholar and MacFarland Scholar at Ormond College. He has been a member of the Australian National Academy of Music Masterclass Program since 1999.
Martin has won many awards, including most recently the Highton Rotary Club's annual Star Search (2002), the Dorothy Glover Piano Scholarship (2001); the Lions Club Scholarship (2001), the Australian Youth Pianoforte Recital (2002) and the Gold Medallion for most outstanding pianist (2001, 2002) of the Dandenong Festival of Music and Art for Youth. He was runner-up in the 2002 Geelong Advertiser Music Scholarship, and has been a finalist in the Hephzibah Menuhin Memorial Awards, the Yamaha Australian Youth Piano Championship and the Lev Vlassenko International Piano Competition. Martin has appeared on radio and television and has been a concerto soloist with the Victorian Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Preston Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Faculty of Music, the University of Melbourne. He has also performed at the Castelmaine State Festival, the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival, the Collins Street Festival and in Melbourne's Summer of Music.
Martin has also sung in the Choir of Ormond College, where he was Senior Chorister for three years, and with whom he has toured Europe on three occasions. He was also a founding member of the Melbourne Composition Choir (later the Australian Contemporary Chorale). His interests outside of music include computers and IT, cycling and Ultimate Frisbee.
